Four! Alcanada is the best golf course in Europe… again

Mallorca’s Club de Golf Alcanada is celebrating being voted the best golf course in Europe for a stunning fourth year in a row after visitors to www.1golf.eu named it their favourite course of 2014.

It is an astonishing achievement for Alcanada and follows on from a recent run of five successive years of receiving the same honour from leading German magazine Golf Journal.

More than 1,000 golfers from 36 countries took part in 1golf.eu’s poll, showing the venue’s global appeal, and the stunning Mallorcan layout beat a host of top courses including the most famous venue in golf, St Andrews Old Course, which claimed sixth place, and Spain’s renowned Ryder Cup venue Valderamma, which took seventh spot.

The poll asked golfers to name their three favorite European courses and awarded three points for a first-place selection, down to one point for being third choice. And when the totals were calculated, it was the Robert Trent Jones Jnr-designed Alcanada that triumphed. Here you can find the ranking www.1golf.eu

Kristoff Both, director of golf at Alcanada, said: “There are many honours bestowed upon golf courses every year, but, personally, I feel those voted for by golfers are among the most valuable.

“Our ethos at Alcanada is geared towards providing the best golfing experience possible for visiting golfers and members, whether they play off scratch or 36. That was the way the course was designed and, 11 years on, it remains our raison d’être.

“So to have been voted as the best course in Europe again, by golfers, again, is an accomplishment of which we are very proud and testament to the hard work put in by everyone at the club from the greenkeepers to the bar staff.”

The 7,108-yard, Trent Jones Jr-designed course has won a steady stream of awards since opening 11 years ago including, most recently, being ranked as the highest-rated course in the Balearics according to Golfboo, the world’s first golf travel search engine, and being shortlisted for the title of Spain’s Best Golf Course 2014, in the inaugural World Golf Awards.

Situated in the north region of Mallorca in a breathtaking location overlooking the Bay of Alcudia, Alcanada’s 18-hole championship course opened in October 2003. Adjacent to the Mediterranean – the only course next the sea on the island – the layout blends naturally into the typical Mallorcan terrain and takes its name from an island with a lighthouse, situated just offshore, which can be seen from most of the holes.

Magnificent mountain and sea views and a mixture of pine and olive groves – ideal for the myriad bird species recorded in a recent ornithological survey – provide the splendid setting for a round at Alcanada and the course is recognised by the golf industry as one of the finest venues in Spain and Europe and is a founder member of The Leading Golf Courses of Spain collection.

In addition, the club boasts a centuries-old Mallorca clubhouse which offers guests the opportunity to sample regional specialties in its first-class dining facilities on a sun-baked terrace. A comprehensive golf academy including a spacious short game area and covered driving range are also available.
